Islamic architecture comprises of religious styles adapted
from the foundation of Islam, without weakening the spiritual essence, which
was the source of inspiration. It is architecture that is guided by Allah (s.w)
and through the laws of sharia (Qur’an, Hadith and Ijtihad Ulama).
Buildings structures that are designed according to the
principles of Islam (as will be discussed), structures that realise the pillars of Islam, built to acknowledge the presence of Allah. Spaces that are considered to
be an expression of faith; that would please Allah (God) and are inspired by Him - in the form of
conveying His benevolence and as an expression of devotion to Him through the
intricate detailing, geometry – representing balance hence wholeness, amongst
other factors that will be further discussed in detail later.
The architecture
is also created to convey beauty of a space, and to provide shelter for
the people who seek its refuge as well as for self-reflection and contemplation
– gardens and water features that make one think of the descriptions of heaven
as written in the Qur’an.
